New Year, Same BS

Just more of it …

Why not start the year off with a bang, I always say. With no fireworks around, unlike most of our neighbors, this will have to do.

I was very disappointed that a city such as Chicago found televising local New Year’s countdowns to 2010 wasn’t worth their trouble, except for one station, the local ABC affiliate. Nothing from CBS, NBC or FOX. Not even from the home grown WGN which I found particularly odd. To be honest, I didn’t pay much attention last year, so it’s possible this isn’t the first year local TV coverage was nearly nonexistent.

Also, our lovely Illinois state government has dropped a new set of laws to go with the new year.

Here are just a few of the new laws, complete with my own spin.

  • “How’s my driving” stickers, complete with area code and phone numbers, will be required for school buses.
    • Can we please make sure whoever runs these phone numbers doesn’t outsource the duties to Abu Dhabi? It would be much appreciated.
  • Sending, receiving or reading electronic transmissions on your cell phone while driving is illegal.
    • You better schedule that joke of the day text to come in after you’re sure to be at home. Officer Friendly just may be looking over your shoulder, in your pocket or on your empty passenger seat, waiting for you to “receive” an electronic transmission. If they enforce this law the way they enforce the talking on cell phones ban in Chicago, John Q Public has nothing to worry about. Let’s not forget about all the cops we see talking on their phones while driving, while on duty, IN A MARKED POLICE CAR! Can we ticket them too? Oh nevermind, I forgot, they’re the same officers who flip their lights/siren on to get through an intersection, not due to an emergency call, but just because they’re too impatient to wait 30 seconds.
  • All flags flown outside of government buildings must have been made in the USA.
    • Better start checking for those made in Taiwan stickers … Count the number of stars too, just to be certain.

So concludes the first post of the new year.

Happy New Year everyone.
